Willyama High School is set to receive a new build after it was damaged by mould in 2024.

Construction begins on landmark rebuild of Willyama High School

Construction is officially underway on the new Willyama High School, marking a historic milestone in the NSW Government’s commitment to public secondary education in Broken Hill.
The project will deliver a modern campus serving students, families and the wider community for generations to come, replacing the original 1970s school building which was severely damaged by mould in early 2024.

Site surveying to mark out the placement of the new school buildings is also complete, confirming exact locations ahead of construction. Piling works are progressing well, with multiple rigs on site to help maintain momentum on the school's foundations. Approval has been received from Broken Hill City Council for the Section 138 public domain works, an important step towards the pedestrian and access improvements planned around the school. The public exhibition period has closed, and the department has reviewed submissions and approved the addendum. The rebuilt high school is expected to open in 2027. The department will provide updates as we get closer to completion.
Concrete pours
Construction of the new Willyama High School continues to progress. As part of these works, several concrete pours are scheduled over the coming weeks. Concrete pours form the foundations and structural slabs of the new buildings and are an essential step before construction can move on to the framework and walls above. These pours will involve extended vehicle movements and additional noise, and we want to keep you informed ahead of time.
Upcoming concrete pours include:
• Pour 1, School Hall — ground slab pour: 1–2 October 2026.
• Pour 2, Culvert — a concrete structure spanning between the hall and main building, poured in five suspended-slab sections will take place between mid-October to mid-November 2026.
Truck movements and traffic management
Concrete trucks will enter the site from Radium Street and exit via Murton Street and McGowan Lane (see map on the next page). The ground slab pour will involve 3 concrete trucks entering and exiting the site up to 10 times per day. Pour 2 will have 3 concrete trucks entering and exiting the site up to 5 times per day.
